Queensland's New Smoke Alarm Laws: What You Need to Know

In Queensland, new smoke alarm laws require interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms to be installed in all homes by 1 January 2027. This applies to both owner-occupied and rental properties. Alarms must be installed in every bedroom, hallways connecting bedrooms and on every level of the residence.
Here is a description of the key requirements sorted out for you by anka security:

Photoelectric alarms:

All smoke alarms must be photoelectric alarms, which means they detect smoke by sensing visible burning particles and do not contain ionization sensors.

Interconnection:

When one interconnected smoke alarm detects smoke, all interconnected alarms in the residence activate.

Power supply:

The alarms must be hardwired to the mains power supply with a battery backup, or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery.

Mounting location:

Alarms must be installed in every bedroom, hallways connecting bedrooms and on every level of the residence. If there are no bedrooms on the same level, the alarm must be installed on the most likely route out of the residence.

When:

The legislation is being implemented in stages and all residences must comply by 1 January 2027. From January 1, 2022, rental properties and properties for sale will need to comply with the regulations.
